repeat performance

the shell she was born with
was torn off in a maelstrom

leaving her to live early
in sweat and shivers

as it grows back
she swings from the edge
of the stage
sometimes hoping to fall,
if only to gauge it’s progress
sometimes hoping just to
be left to swing,
a pendulum reflecting
an unexplored world

she knows
she will only
be dragged back

ushered away from this
transitory view
to a seat reserved for her
right there in the wings

close enough to smell
the breath of the cast
and to feel their heat
on the exposed curves
of her eyes

as the klieg’s begin to burn
and the conductor cue’s the
brass and timpani
she thinks she feels another
plate on her evolving
carapace slide
into position

she hides her smile –
the curtain goes up
