looks realistic

August 2, 2013 § Leave a comment

light, lunar on
my night walk –
I hold out hope
for a glint of Spanish gold

making my way along
the wrack line
ghost crabs
harvest within the flotsam

and to the birds
I am no more than
a nuisance as I
kick at some kelp or
poke through sea oats
on the shelf above the high mark
but there is not
even an ounce

up to town there are shops
with cases full of the stuff –
pilfered from
Neptune’s vaults and
displayed along side of
renderings of
the wrecks it came from

yellow and silver
working class dreams
sharing space with
souvenir maps and post cards
and above the register
there is
the styrofoam parrot

and he,
just like those
night patrol wishes,
carries the label,
“looks realistic”
