proving a love

February 12, 2013 § Leave a comment

I’m not sure
how it could be explained
to the authorities,
besides that,
there are easier ways
to prove my existence
other than
digging up and reassembling
my bones

just remembering
our conversations should
do it, I mean

we spent a fair amount
of our adolescent evenings
sitting with
stolen beer on the
steps behind the school

all of that talking

hours spent on the seasons,
on constellations,
our belief in or lack of a god,
your dreams of Europe
and mine of mountain seclusion

you made it to Europe
and I waited,
just laid down
and waited

and I was real
you knew that then,
you do now,
at least a part
of you does

the part of you
that isn’t throwing dirt
over a shoulder
one shovelful at
a time
