kings

May 3, 2012 § 2 Comments

should there be pity
for all of these kings
drowning in storms
of their own making?
rain of
perceived treason filling
the oceans of their minds
pity?
for them?
perhaps a fraction

but look…
see how they slip beneath
the surface of anxiety
darkly funny
really
if you bother to
give it much thought

  • John Stevens says:

I wonder who all these kings are? I heard a radio talk last night about Shakespeare’s plays which puts Othello and others into my mind. But the news bulletins report on the fall (or bloody clinging to power) of dictators – and of course of self-appointed gang leaders such as Osama bin Laden.
Should there be pity for all these kings “drowning in storms of their own making?”. I like the way your poem offers a moderate and humane possibility: “perhaps a fraction”.

  • I love your blog posts, quite interesting.

&& thanks for checking mine out 🙂
