the lasting effects of late night television circa 1972

the twigs stacked
by the fence
appeared in the long
shadows of the morning
like giant arachnids

those who didn’t
make it through – such as
ones cut down
en masse
in battle
in some glorious end
to a grainy science fiction film
of my boyhood

the dew steaming off
the entangled limbs
as the sun found its way
to them from
behind the peak of
the garage
added to the effect

so much so
that I found myself
closing the kitchen window
turning the latch slowly
into place
and squinting at the pile
over my raised coffee mug

readying myself
for flight
at even the slightest
evidence of a sequel
