there will come that morning

February 3, 2012 § 4 Comments

there will come that morning
when the alarm will go off
the cats will leap from
the foot of the bed
anticipating breakfast
I, of course, will moan,
as is my custom
upon crawling out
from under the covers

reaching the bedroom
door I will turn back
for the eyeglasses so
often forgotten
on the pages
of a book open on
the nightstand

then, putting them on
and adjusting to
the waking
the dim light
I will notice myself still
laying next to my wife
her sheets gently rising and
falling with each sweet breath
the ones I thought
I had thrown off
still covering me
unmoving

the confusion, I hope,
won’t last long
and there’s always the
chance that
I may have the good
fortune to be able
to kiss her goodbye

and to turn to myself
to push my tongue back
into my mouth
and straighten my head
on the pillow
before submitting
completely
to my new life
in the ether
